Q. What is it about accounting and consulting that first drew your interest?
Accounting is the language of business, and I wanted a good foundation to that would allow me to gain broad experience in the business world. Then as my career developed, I found accounting quite intriguing — it’s problem-solving at its core. I enjoy challenges that push me to be dynamic and creative.
Q. What was it that drew you to Armanino?
The emphasis on putting people first. Armanino invests in people and find their voice, and encourages everyone to let their voice be heard. The people are personable, warm and inviting, and I have access to incredible resources and technology experts that help me do more for my clients.
Q. Make a prediction; describe your vision of the future of the general business environment for your area of expertise or the industries you serve.
It’s going to be interesting to see on the tax side how tax legislation will accommodate the advancement of blockchain, NFTs and cryptocurrency. These move quickly, and it takes time for tax legislation to catch up. My prediction is in 10 years, tech experts will be shaping these laws at a federal level to help them become less antiquated and updating legislation to prepare for more advances in technology.
Q. What keeps you up at night?
My kids and their future. I want to make sure they have opportunities and resources, and that the world’s a better place for them. I care about my team members in the same way, and want to make sure they’re taken care of and have opportunities for growth and meeting their goals.
Q. Who is (or was) the most influential person in your life
My dad taught me a lot of good lessons in the way he lived his life. My parents came to the U.S. from Fiji to provide a better life for their kids, and worked several jobs and stressed the importance of education to us. They provided the valuable resource to be able to do what we wanted in life. My father didn’t have that and worked to provide that opportunity for us. I was grateful for the ability to ping him and get his thoughts, as well as for the life lessons he taught me. As I’m teaching them to my kids now, it’s gratifying to see how I’m going through that same cycle of fatherhood and continuing his legacy.
Q. What do you love most about your work?
On the client side, I enjoy my work and communicating with entrepreneurs and decision makers. I’m fascinated by how their minds work and that they’re never complacent, always trying to grow. I’ve learned a lot from them about how they got started and grew their businesses, and I enjoy that piece of our relationship. On the firm side, I enjoy watching staff I’ve mentored and worked with move up. Their success is my success. Seeing the maturation and growth of people is one of the things I love most about my career.
