Meet Chris*

Chris leads the Tax department’s business development efforts, working hand in hand with tax partners and other leaders across industries and geographic offices.

Prior to joining Armanino, he was at TaxOps, a tax-only, corporate tax firm in Denver. Over the course of seven years at TaxOps, Chris was responsible for cultivating and managing long-term client relationships, while identifying prospects and converting them into clients.

Before launching his accounting career, Chris served in the United States Navy on the USS Eisenhower, a nuclear aircraft carrier where he negotiated and managed the procurement of over $1 billion of aviation supplies.

In addition to his work in the Navy and at TaxOps, Chris’s extensive tax, legal and business development background includes KPMG’s International Corporate Tax practice, serving as VP of Business Development for Lawyers Title (f.k.a. LandAmerica), and serving as the leader of expansion for a national staffing and recruiting firm.

Chris received a J.D. and LL.M. in Taxation from the University of Denver. He also received a B.A. in Political Science from Colorado State University. He has presented tax classes for the Colorado Bar Association and other organizations.

Q&A

Q. What was it that drew you to Armanino?
The incredible opportunity, backed up by best-in-class resources. Armanino is a chance for me to take my career to the next level. I always want to “wow” my clients, and I know Armanino has the talent and solutions to do just that. The firm won’t shy away from challenges and new ideas, and I find that refreshing in a traditionally subdued industry.
Q. Make a prediction and describe your vision of the future business environment for your area of expertise or the industries you serve.
Clients need a partner prepared to be at the forefront and see what’s coming next. The future business environment can change from industry to industry, but Armanino has industry expertise in dozens of verticals. I’m committed to making the right connections so every client is paired with industry leaders who have the business acumen to be forward-thinking, know risks and can identify the opportunities.
Q. Without naming names, tell us about your favorite client and why you enjoyed working with them.
I had a very large engineering company with its own tax department of about 45 people. They valued good tax intelligence and understood what a return on investment they could get with a well-staffed tax team. The people there were always willing to listen to ideas on maximizing opportunities.
Q. Who is (or was) the most influential person in your life?
My wife, because she has always been grounded with good values and morals. She’s my biggest influence and we live our values together.
Q. If you could pass on a nugget of wisdom to aspiring accountants or consultants, what would that be?
When you’re an accountant, the numbers are only part of it. You had better learn to think outside of the box and be innovative. If you don’t, you’re just like everybody else.
