Meet Renee*

Renee has more than 25 years of experience in public accounting and industry―including serving as the CFO of a nonprofit organization―and brings an entrepreneurial approach to her work. She provides audit and consulting services to a broad range of clients, including nonprofit organizations, privately held businesses and public companies. In the nonprofit sector, her expertise extends to income tax matters pertaining to unrelated business income and non-recurring business transactions.

She serves on the finance committee of the Theodore Payne Foundation and the board of Upward Bound House. She is a former board president and treasurer of the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Renee has a B.A. in English literature from the University of Texas, Austin, and an M.B.A. from the Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, and has taught nonprofit accounting at UCLA Extension.

Q. What is it about accounting and consulting that first drew your interest?
After getting a degree in English literature, I was working for a nonprofit, and I decided to take some accounting classes. My comparative literature background had given me great analytical and communication skills, but I wanted to learn more about business. I discovered that I loved accounting work. I love really getting to know an organization and helping them as their needs change.
Q. What was it that drew you to Armanino?
The firm has a very strong focus on its clients. Armanino partners don’t just stay in their offices, they actively engage with their clients and find innovative ways to improve their businesses.
Q. What is one of the main changes you see impacting nonprofit organizations?
Nonprofits are changing how they engage with donor groups. They need to stay focused on major donors and traditional fundraising, and at the same time figure out ways to engage millennials via new technologies and new interest areas. Young people are interested in impact, and nonprofit CFOs have an important role to play in measuring and communicating the impact their organizations have.
Q. Describe your work style.
Collaborative. I really enjoy working with engagement team members, other parts of the firm and clients’ staff to deliver quality work. I like to say that audit is a team sport.
Q. Who is (or was) the most influential person in your life
My middle school English teacher. She pushed me to always do my absolute best and not just stop at what is good enough.
Q. If you could pass on a nugget of wisdom to aspiring accountants or consultants, what would that be?
In public accounting, you really do learn something new every day. You must be committed to learning and embrace change.
