Q&A

Q. What was it that drew you to Armanino?

Our approach to public accounting and our approach to clients. Armanino looks at clients holistically, fostering a highly collaborative culture of teamwork.

Many of my clients are privately held businesses, and while the tax planning may occur at the entity level, the tax consequences are reflected at the owner’s level. This requires considering the unique facts and circumstances of each client. It is important that I have access to colleagues from all Armanino’s service lines to provide my clients with the best business knowledge and capabilities possible.
Q. Without naming names, tell us about your favorite client and why you enjoyed working with them.
I enjoy the types of engagements where I can be a full-service provider, really helping clients in all aspects of their business. If issues come up, and I cannot help them myself, I can put them in touch with people who can. Helping them solve their pain points and challenges from a business and individual perspective and seeing them go through the entire lifecycle of their business. As their advisor, helping them consider selling their business, generational gifting, etc. Those situations are the most rewarding for me, and I love being able to set up my clients for a successful and tax efficient transition.
Q. Describe your work style.

I like to teach my team to fish so they can fish for a lifetime. I’m always available for questions, but it’s so important for a manager to really own the client relationship as well. My team knows I’m there to support them for any technical or situational questions, but it’s important for them to grow on their own. My biggest success is making sure I have a team of people behind me who are going to be promoted. Without that legacy, I’m a sole practitioner. I would be thrilled if I could help promote five new partners before I retire.

With clients, I think it’s really important to make the client have the experience of feeling they’re my only client and that I am available when they need me. I am always looking out for their best interests, giving them what they think they need and what I think they need. I aim to make sure I’m reaching out proactively and my clients feel how invested I am in their businesses.
Q. Who is (or was) the most influential person in your life?
I had a teacher in high school who made me believe I could actually go to college, continue my education with a master’s degree and have an impactful career. No one in my family had a professional career and I was the first generation to graduate in the US. Having this person in my life in that moment, to show me that I could make it happen, was a profound turning point for me. We never know the ripple effects our influence has on others, which is why I show up every day.
Q. If you could pass on a nugget of wisdom to aspiring accountants or consultants, what would that be?
You never know who you’re going to impact day-to-day, so show up as the best version of you.
Q. What do you love most about your work?
The variety. That’s why I’m in public accounting! We regularly see legislation come and go, challenging our tax consulting muscles. The work is personal for me. Whether it’s mentoring people on my teams and watching them grow professionally or helping clients address the challenges they face on daily or annual basis, I’m invested.
