Meet Mike

Mike is Armanino’s State and Local Tax (SALT) West Region practice leader. He advises clients on state and local tax matters related to administrative audits, corporate and personal income, property, sales and use, payroll and business licenses. While starting with a holistic approach to an organization’s multistate tax considerations, Mike also provides guidance with respect to individual jurisdictions. He has extensive experience before California taxing agencies, including the California Franchise Tax Board, the California State Department of Tax and Fee Administration and the California State Board of Equalization.

A frequent author and speaker on SALT issues, Mike has published in numerous national tax publications and has been invited to speak for various associations. Q. What was it that drew you to Armanino?
Working with so many creative, entrepreneurially minded professionals toward common goals. I’m in a position to offer holistic advice and help clients implement strategies in the trenches.
Q. What do you predict the future will look like for clients in the industries you serve?
More clients will face administrative burdens as tax footprints continue to expand at the state and local levels. Expect to see more compliance obligations and a greater need to be on top of changes in the national, state and local landscape.
Q. Without naming names, tell us about your favorite client and why you enjoyed working with them.
I enjoy working with clients who are invested in the process and are interested in working together as a team on complex tax issues. Being able to connect on both a professional and personal level, establishing trust and building a strong relationship based on mutual respect makes my work rewarding.
Q. Describe your work style.
Clients and colleagues have told me that they appreciate my easy-going personality. Underneath, I’m hard-working and drive myself to ensure high-quality results. I take pride in my ability to help clients and colleagues alike feel at ease in high-pressure situations.
Q. If you could pass on a nugget of wisdom to aspiring accountants or consultants, what would that be?
Take everything you do seriously, but don’t take yourself too seriously.
Q. What do you love most about your work?
I enjoy solving complex tax matters that are new or unique; the challenge sparks parts of the brain that make problem-solving fun. Especially in tax, I enjoy being able to get more of the analytical part of my brain to inform and guide creativity.
